Baselmans collection
- Acquisition: Collection of glacial erratics
- Donated by: Kees Baselmans
About the acquisition
These rocks and stones were collected by Kees Baselmans. For fifty years, Kees, also known as “Kees op de fiets” (Kees on the bicycle), collected glacial erratics during bicycle trips in the Kempen region of Brabant. Especially along fields where potatoes were harvested, he found many different kinds of stones. His efforts resulted in a special collection, an important part of which Kees donated to the museum.
In some of these rocks you can see imprints of, for example, petrified wood or sea creatures such as sea urchins, sea lilies, sponges, coral and shells. Among them are stones and fossils from the Ice Age, but also finds from the Carboniferous (300 million years old) and Cretaceous (65 million years old).
